Teamsters Canada Rail Conference issues 72-hour strike notice to Canadian Pacific

Union representing thousands of workers at Canadian Pacific Kansas City says it's served a 72-hour strike notice

If a negotiated settlement cannot be reached, the earliest a work stoppage at CN and CP could begin is Friday.

CALGARY, Alberta (Aug. 18, 2024) – The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) today served a 72-hour strike notice to Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail. The union represents approximately 1,200 locomotive engineers, conductors, trainpersons and yardpersons at CP.

In a statement, TCRC said that the union has been in negotiations with CP since May 2023 and that the two sides have been unable to reach an agreement on a new contract.

The union said that the key issues in the dispute are wages, benefits and working conditions.

The strike notice means that if a negotiated settlement cannot be reached, the earliest a work stoppage at CN and CP could begin is Friday.

A strike at CP would have a significant impact on the Canadian economy. CP is one of the largest railroads in Canada, and it transports a wide range of goods, including grain, coal, and potash.

A strike would also disrupt passenger rail service in Canada. VIA Rail operates trains on CP tracks in many parts of the country.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference is the largest union representing rail workers in Canada.

Canadian Pacific is one of the largest railroads in Canada, with operations in Canada and the United States.
